Scope of Job

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position in Painting and Drawing in the School of Art to start in the Fall 2020. The Assistant Professor in Painting and Drawing Position is based on the Brownsville campus. The successful candidate will teach on both the Brownsville and Edinburg campuses.

The successful candidate will be a Painter who is prepared to teach Painting and Drawing at all levels, from the introductory to advanced, from introduction to figure drawing to advanced drawing topics, to graduate courses with students from all media areas. The candidate will also have the ability to teach skills in observational painting and drawing (e.g., manipulation of pictorial space, paint handling, color theory, and composition), as well as the demonstrated capacity to teach students in conceptual and expressive concerns, contemporary practices and advanced problems in painting across multiple painting and drawing mediums. A 3/3 course load is anticipated with an anticipated one course release during the first year for research. Service is expected in the form of governance, curricular development, and other committee work that is critical to the mission of the 2-D Studio Division, School of Art, College of Fine Arts, and University.

The ideal candidate will maintain an active exhibition record and a commitment to excellence in research, art program/curriculum development and a willingness to promote the UTRGV Studio Art program as well as engage with students in advisement and mentorship. The position may also include coordination of the Brownsville campus gallery space in liaison with the School of Art Gallery Coordinator.

The UTRGV School of Art is a bi-campus school which maintains facilities in both Edinburg and Brownsville. In Edinburg it has a 73,000-square foot facility with the highest quality studios and labs in graphic design, sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing, printmaking, digital photography and film photography with a wet lab. In Brownsville it has a 20,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space with very unique 20-foot-high ceilings in all of their studios for optimum student art production in painting, ceramics, sculpture photography (digital and film), printmaking, drawing, an iMac lab for computer imaging and graphics, and a 3000-square foot outdoor open area for experimental art.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will hold an MFA from an accredited institution of higher learning concentrating in Painting and/or Painting and Drawing.
• Evidence of a minimum of two years of successful college or university level teaching experience in Painting and Drawing beyond T.A. appointments.
• Evidence of an active studio practice concentrating in Painting and Drawing.
• Evidence of professional engagement via an active and ongoing record of exhibitions.

Preferred Qualifications

Evidence within the past 3 years of juried, curated, and professionally vetted or peer reviewed exhibition experience at the national and/or international levels at galleries, museums, or centers for art.
Demonstrated experience in art gallery maintenance and/or coordination.
Evidence of demonstrated ability to teach figuration within an academic context.
Capacity and/or demonstrated ability to take on leadership roles in the context of departmental governance.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.
