Digital Art II

A. Digital Art II (TCCN ARTS 2349)
Prerequisite: The freshman transfer curriculum (Drawing I, Drawing II and Design I) and Digital Art I. Digital Art II is a studio course which uses computer hardware and software as a medium for visual and conceptual expression in the visual arts.

B. FOCUS, PURPOSE AND GOALS OF COURSE:

1. COURSE PURPOSE:
Digital Art II will give students a chance to apply their prior computer graphics skills and to focus on the development and production of creative art pieces.

2. COURSE GOALS:
Digital Art II - By the end of the semester, each student will:
a. more fully understand computer terminology, operating systems and equipment.
b. have an expanded comprehension of the strengths and weaknesses of various software applications.
c. apply concepts in art, design and computer graphics to solve advanced visual problems.


C. PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES - Expected student outcomes by domain:

1. COGNITIVE: (Development of critical thinking skills, conceptual constructs, specialized vocabulary and art history.) By the end of the semester:
a. Each student will compare, contrast and interrelate computer graphics with other traditional artistic media.
b. Each student will understand the role of computer graphics and its application to the diverse disciplines of fine arts.
c. Each student will understand artistic and design legal issues: image appropriation, copyright, modes of distribution and exhibition.
d. Each student will understand and apply artistic concepts: draftsmanship, composition and aesthetics.
e. Each student will research computer art by seeking design information from a variety of sources such as books, periodicals, exhibitions, museums, web sites, etc.
f. Each student will demonstrate a capacity for synthesis by creating computer art, which incorporates and unifies disparate elements, processes, motifs and concepts.
g. Each student will use vocabulary specific to the computer art processes.

2. PSYCHOMOTOR: (Development of manipulative, work-oriented skills; demonstration of specific process skills). By the end of the semester:
a. Each student will develop technical and craftsmanship skills through hands-on work with computer graphic software and hardware.
b. Each student will demonstrate flexibility and adaptability by using a variety of technical and conceptual strategies in resolving image-making problems.
d. Each student will develop, produce and output projects that are technically, aesthetically and conceptually sophisticated.

e. Each student will understand studio technology and safety
f. Each student will present his or her designs for ideal contextual viewing.
g. Each student will orally critique computer art forms in an intelligent manner.
h. Each student will present neat, clean, well-crafted projects.


3. AFFECTIVE: (Development of behavioral skills which help the student acquire a positive attitude toward self, other students, faculty, facilities and equipment, housekeeping in the work area, and the ability to carry out directions, meet deadlines, meet attendance requirements, etc.) By the end of the semester:
a. Each student will have regular and punctual class attendance.
b. Each student will follow instructions, stay on task and attempt to exceed the requirements set by the instructor.
c. Each student will resolve art problems and complete assignments in a timely manner
d. Each student will improve upon solutions to design problems, especially in the face of risk-taking and failure.
e. Each student will develop initiative, self-reliance and a drive to reach full potential.
f. Each student will produce computer art in which nuance is evident (nuance in form, nuance in content).
g. Each student will demonstrate independence of judgement (and resistance to peer sanctions) by producing artworks which are personally unique or unusual.
h. Each student will attempt difficult or complex computer art problems.
i. Each student will observe safe studio and shop practices.
j. Each student will contribute to the working environment in the studio.
k. Each student will display a positive and professional attitude in class.
l. Each student will be tolerant of diverse views and personalities.
m. Each student will offer, receive and act on constructive criticism.
n. Each student will ask relevant questions, offer useful comments and participate, without prompting, in both group and individual critiques.
o. Each student will prepare adequately for examinations.
