ART HISTORY II (TCCN 1304) Art History II presents a chronological examination of painting, sculpture, architecture and related visual arts from the early Renaissance to the present. May be taken in either year of this curriculum. (The course may be conducted thematically and/or chronologically.) ARTS 1303 (1st semester) ARTS 1304 (2nd semester) B. FOCUS, PURPOSE AND GOALS OF COURSE: 1. COURSE PURPOSE: The purpose of Art History II is to introduce students to the development of period styles in the Western tradition from the early Renaissance to the present. Students will also acquire a knowledge of the principal artists and architects of this period. 2. COURSE GOALS: By the end of the term the student will have demonstrated: a. an ability to utilize art historical terminology b. an ability to identify geographic centers, time periods and stylistic characteristics of major art movements c. an ability to recognize individual styles of major artists d. an understanding of the technical procedures for work in a variety of media e. an understanding of the impact of individuals, historical events and religious and philosophical concepts on art making in various periods f. an understanding of iconography and its importance g. an ability to write about art in a clear and effective manner h. an ability to think critically C. PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES - Expected student outcomes by domain: 1. COGNITIVE: (Development of critical thinking skills, conceptual constructs, specialized vocabulary and art history.) a. Each student will be able to describe the major stylistic transformations in Western art for the period covered by the course. b. Each student will be able to identify works of art by medium and technique. c. Each student will be able to write about works of art in their historical, cultural, political and philosophical contexts. d. Each student will be able to utilize resources such as the Art Index to carry out basic research on art. e. Each student will be able to identify by artist, style and date art works shown during exams. f. AFFECTIVE: (Development of behavioral skills which help the student acquire a positive attitude toward self, other students, faculty, facilities and equipment, housekeeping in the work area, and the ability to carry out directions, meet deadlines, meet attendance requirements, etc.) a. The student will demonstrate interest in art history by regular and punctual class attendance. b. The student will demonstrate the ability to follow assignment instructions as well as ntrinsic motivation by persistence in staying on task and frequently exceeding the production requirements set by the instructor. c. The student will demonstrate courage and tenacity by persistence in resolvin g research problems and completing assignments in a timely manner d.
