 A.  ART HISTORY I  (TCCN 1303)
TASA course description - Prerequisites: None. Art History I presents a chronological examination 
of Western painting, sculpture, architecture and related visual arts from prehistoric times to 
the end of the Gothic period. May be taken in either year of this curriculum.
 (It should be noted that some programs include non-Western art in the first half of the art history 
survey. The course may be conducted thematically and/or chronologically.)

B.  FOCUS, PURPOSE AND GOALS OF COURSE:

1.  COURSE PURPOSE:
The purpose of Art History I is to introduce students to the development of period styles 
in the Western tradition from prehistoric times to the late Middle Ages. Students will also 
acquire a knowledge of the principal artists and architects of this period.

2.  COURSE GOALS:
By the end of the term the student will have demonstrated:
a.	an ability to utilize art historical terminology
b.	an ability to identify geographic centers, time periods and stylistic characteristics of 
major art movements
c.	an ability to recognize individual styles of major artists
d.	an understanding of the technical procedures for work in a variety of media
e.	an understanding of the impact of individuals, historical events and religious and 
philosophical concepts on art making in various periods
f.	an understanding of iconography and its importance
g.	an ability to write about art in a clear and effective manner
h.	an ability to think critically


C. PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES - Expected student outcomes by domain:

1. COGNITIVE: (Development of critical thinking skills, conceptual constructs, specialized 
vocabulary and art history.) 
a.	Each student will be able to describe the major stylistic transformations in Western art for the 
period covered by the course.
b.	Each student will be able to identify works of art by medium and technique.
c.	Each student will be able to write about works of art in their historical, cultural, political and 
philosophical contexts.
d.	The student will demonstrate interest in art history by seeking information from a variety 
of sources such as books, periodicals, exhibitions, museums, etc.
e.	Each student will be able to utilize resources such as the Art Index to carry out basic research
 on art.
f.	Each student will be able to identify by artist, style and date art works shown during exams.
g.	Each student will be able to write brief but meaningful comparisons of art works shown in 
slides during exams.

2.  AFFECTIVE: (Development of behavioral skills which help the student acquire a positive 
attitude toward self, other students, faculty, facilities and equipment, housekeeping in the work 
area, and the ability to carry out directions, meet deadlines, meet attendance requirements, etc.)
a.	The student will demonstrate interest in art history by regular and punctual class attendance.
b.	The student will demonstrate the ability to follow assignment instructions as well as intrinsic 
motivation by persistence in staying on task and frequently exceeding the production requirements 
set by the instructor.
c.	The student will demonstrate courage and tenacity by persistence in resolving research problems 
and completing assignments in a timely manner 
d.	Each student will demonstrate the ability to tolerate diverse views.
e.	Each student will demonstrate the ability to prepare adequately for examinations.
f.	Each student will demonstrate the ability to receive constructive criticism.
