TASA course description - Prerequisites: None. Art Appreciation presents 
an introduction to the visual arts through an exploration of their purposes 
and processes. May be taken in either year of this curriculum.

B.  FOCUS, PURPOSE AND GOALS OF COURSE:

1.  COURSE PURPOSE:
The purpose of Art Appreciation is to provide each student with an 
understanding of the diverse ways in which different cultures construct 
and represent their reality. Through thematic examination of both 
historical and contemporary art the student will acquire a vocabulary to
 describe formal properties of art, techniques of art making, and social, 
psychological, spiritual and physical uses of art.

2.  COURSE GOALS:
Art Appreciation is designed to provide a foundation for understanding 
multiple aspects of diverse art forms. By the end of the term the student 
will have demonstrated:
a.	mastery of a basic vocabulary of formal terms
b.   an understanding of how formal properties are used to create perceptual
 and psychological effects
c.	an understanding of the technical procedures for work in a variety of 
media
d.	an ability to assess the role of art within its cultural context
e.   an ability to recognize major cultural styles and forms of art
f.	an ability to write about art in a clear and effective manner
g.	an ability to think critically


C. PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES - Expected student outcomes by domain:


1. COGNITIVE: (Development of critical thinking skills, conceptual constructs,
 specialized vocabulary and art history.) 
a.	Each student will be able to utilize analytical tools acquired in the 
course to assess the psychological, social, expressive, spiritual and 
physical uses of actual art works encountered in museums, galleries or 
artists' studios.
b.	Each student will be able to identify works of art by medium and 
technique.
c.	Each student will be able to carry out a written analysis of the formal 
properties of a selected work of art.
d.	Each student will be able to utilize resources such as the Art Index to 
carry out basic research on art.
e.	The student will demonstrate interest in art appreciation by seeking 
information from a variety of sources such as books, periodicals, 
exhibitions, museums, etc.
f.	Each student will be able to identify by culture and style art works 
shown during exams.
g.	Each student will be able to write brief but meaningful interpretations 
of art works shown in slides during exams.

2.  AFFECTIVE: (Development of behavioral skills which help the student 
acquire a positive attitude toward self, other students, faculty, facilities
 and equipment, housekeeping in the work area, and the ability to carry out 
directions, meet deadlines, meet attendance requirements, etc.)
a.	The student will demonstrate interest in art appreciation by regular
 and punctual class attendance.
b.	The student will demonstrate the ability to follow assignment 
instructions as well as intrinsic motivation by persistence in staying on 
task and frequently exceeding the production requirements set by the 
instructor.
c.	Each student will demonstrate the ability to complete assignments.
d.	Each student will demonstrate the ability to comply with due dates.
e.	Each student will demonstrate the ability to tolerate diverse views.
f.	Each student will demonstrate the ability to prepare adequately for 
examinations.
g.	Each student will demonstrate the ability to receive constructive 
criticism.
