CALL TO ARTISTS, CURATORS AND COLLECTORS:
The Blue Yonder
March 4 - April 17, 2011
The Nancy Fyfe Cardozier Gallery in the Visual Arts Studios at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin invites participation from interested parties for the following exhibition:
March 4 - April 17, 2011
The Blue Yonder
In collaboration with regional air museums, this show highlights the aesthetics of flight through various artifacts and the work of artists inspired by them.
Opening reception: Friday, March 4, 2011, 7-9 pm. Free and open to the public.
This will be an exciting show in that it will present artwork inspired by the history and science of flight along with objects that are and/or were once operational in the function of flight. With your help this show will bring together a great diversity of objects and images surrounding the subject. If you are interested in participating in this exhibit you can help in two different ways:
First, please identify those artists you are familiar with who make artwork that addresses this subject and forward a copy of this to them. It is hoped that the more traditional approaches to the subject will be included along with more contemporary and even abstract work.
Secondly, consider objects you may have in your collection that have a technical, historical, and aesthetic value that you think would contribute to this exhibition. As museum curators of what is an important part of American history you have a knowledge and understanding of this subject much deeper than those of us in the visual arts. Everything will be considered: wings, tail fins, canopies, flight suits, flight helmets, instrumentation, mechanical gear, etc.
Please consider this to be an opportunity to generate some recognition for your institution, and potentially even an exhibit that could be replicated at other venues. This is not a competition, but instead a less formal collaborative effort amongst many people. I expect most of the curatorial process can be done through email communications. Also there is no concrete timeline. The only deadline is February 21 when all of the objects/work should be on site for installation. The curatorial process will be ongoing up until that point. It is my intention to include something from all willing institutions, and hopefully something from all interested artists.
Unfortunately there will be some expense to participating parties. Nancy Fyfe Cardozier Gallery will take care of printing, postage, advertising, the opening reception, and return shipping. Any items that are packaged appropriately and arrive by UPS will be returned to them the way they came. Objects larger than the UPS limit will need to be transported both ways by the contributing artist/institution. With negotiation and mutual cooperation we may arrive at compromises in most situations.
Please contact me ASAP with concerns, suggestions and willingness to participate and we will get the ball rolling, or more appropriately, this thing off the ground. I’m looking forward to a successful exhibition and the attention it could bring to us all.

HOLLIS HAMMONDS' DRAWING BOOK:
Drawing Structure: Conceptual & Observational Techniques
Dear Friends & Colleagues,
I apologize for the following self-promotion, but I wanted to
let you know that the price of my beginning drawing textbook
has been lowered to a more reasonable $40.00. See more
information below.
Drawing Structure: Conceptual & Observational Techniques
This book provides an introduction to the technical aspects of representational drawing. Whether you have little to no experience with drawing, or have been drawing all of your life, this text is structured so that every student will leave with a set of analytic drawing tools, which will enable them to render almost any form realistically. As beginners, it is essential to learn the language of drawing through the study of representation. We will practice both conceptual and observational drawing techniques. We will first establish the conceptual rules of linear perspective, eye level, convergence and ideal volumes. Then, we will practice observing and recording the real world through perceptual tools and techniques. Once we begin to combine our observational skills with our conceptual knowledge, we will be able to embrace the limitless potential of drawing as an essential form of creation and expression.

TASA HEROS / BOB HEXT: 1948 - 2007
NOTE from Linda Fawcett, TASA Past President:

TASA will sorely miss Bob's cheerful presence at board meetings and conferences. A TASA member since at least the late 1980s, he also served two consecutive terms as TASA Board Member and Chair of the Membership Subcommittee from 2001-2006, and he and his wife Kristi have been longtime regular conference attendees. At the last conference in Junction (April 2006) Bob was given the TASA Hero Award for inspirationally standing up to very serious health issues. We are all still in shock at his untimely passing and will miss him! Read more...
